When we think of Christian art, we usually picture angels, the Virgin Mary, or heavenly scenes. But in reality, we’re very mistaken.

Christian art can be deeply terrifying. From the most disturbing depictions of Christ to nightmarish visions of hell imagined by medieval artists, its imagery often goes far beyond what we tend to associate with religion.

The thing is—we’ve gotten used to seeing these images. We grew up with them. And by now, they probably don’t scare us anymore. But what happens if we look at them with fresh eyes?

Maybe it’s not that they aren’t frightening. Maybe they’ve just become too familiar.
