His true route through Persia

Historian Pierre Dietz reconstructs the campaign of Julian the Third Apostata to Persia anew. In his view, the route of the army does not follow the Euphrates, but the Tigris. Assigning the places named in the ancient sources to satellite images produces an exact route. The film follows the path of the Romans from the frontier to the gates of Ctesiphon, which Julian never reaches. The attempt at a retreat over land costs the Senior Augustus his life.

Historian Pierre Dietz reconstructs the Persian campaign of Julian the Third Apostata anew from ancient sources, satellite images and the topography of Mesopotamia. According to his research, the Roman army does not follow the Euphrates, but the Tigris and uses a wide network of canals, marshes and river branches for the advance into the territory of the Parthi. Assigning the places named in the sources produces a continuous route from the frontier deep into today’s Iraq. The film follows the path of the Romans through fortified cities, artificial waterways and landscapes that are difficult to cross. With the destruction of the fleet ordered by Julian, a costly retreat over land begins for the army. The planned forced march to Ctesiphon loses momentum. The campaign ends with the death of the Senior Augustus near Maroesa.
