More than 1,600 years ago, a monk entered the Egyptian desert and began mapping a battlefield most Christians never see—the human mind.

In Season 4, Episode 1 of The Exorcism Chronicles: The Hidden War, we meet Evagrius Ponticus, one of the most important early Christian thinkers on temptation, thoughts, passions, prayer, and interior spiritual warfare. Season 4 begins the newly approved Evagrius arc, examining how the Desert Fathers learned to recognize the patterns behind temptation and how that knowledge eventually entered Western Christianity through St. John Cassian. The season's approved purpose includes Evagrius's life and setting, logismoi, memory and imagination, bodily conditions, cooperating thoughts, disturbed prayer, disclosure, spiritual deception, apatheia, and Western transmission.

Evagrius did not begin as a desert hermit. He moved within the world of St. Basil the Great and St. Gregory Nazianzen before personal crisis drove him toward Jerusalem and eventually Egypt. There, among some of Christianity's greatest ascetics, he began organizing what generations of monks had learned through experience.

What emerged was an astonishingly detailed anatomy of temptation.

How does a thought enter? When does temptation become consent? How can memory and imagination become battlegrounds? Why do certain temptations repeatedly return? And what happens when several thoughts begin working together?

This episode begins the journey into the ancient Christian understanding of the hidden war inside the mind.
