PASSENGER - A Disturbing Religious Folklore Nightmare

Passenger has a genuinely interesting premise: a young couple ditch city life for van life, pick up a curse on the night road, and find themselves stalked across America by a supernatural hitchhiker that punishes compassion. That setup has the grime of roadside folklore, the creepiness of the vast highway system, the loneliness of constant movement, and the very simple but effective fear that when you stop on a dark road at night, something might climb in with you that was never meant to be there. The idea is like a meeting point between The Hitcher, a campfire story, and one of those half-remembered road superstitions that old truckers pass around to terrify rookies.

André Øvredal is exactly the kind of director that can make this work. The man gave us Trollhunter and The Autopsy of Jane Doe, two films that understood atmosphere, framing, and the value of letting dread breathe. Even Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, whatever their flaws, had moments of craft in them. So, “Øvredal doing highway horror with a demonic road spirit and Christian folklore” sounded like a very decent night at the cinema. In practice, Passenger ends up as one of those films that keeps brushing against something better and then immediately smothering it under generic jump scares, vague mythology, and characters so flat they feel as if they were generated by a van-life lifestyle blog.
