On a single night in Bucharest in 1904, a foreign pastor who could not speak Romanian preached the gospel to one hundred fifty people who heard him in perfect Romanian. This is the 1904 Pentecost most Christians have never heard about. The miracle was in the hearing.
A Russian missionary named Pastor Johann Ginter arrived in Bucharest with a small dictionary in his pocket and a calling he could not yet pronounce. Three weeks of grammar drills had given him almost nothing. The Sabbath keepers he was sent to find had already been found by God before he arrived. A fourteen-year-old translator named Helga did her trembling best. Six armed officers of the state religion sat in the front row. And then, in a packed room at the edge of the city, the same miracle that fell on the early church in Acts chapter two fell again. The disciples in Jerusalem did not become polyglots that morning. The crowd was loaded into their ears. So was Bucharest. One of the armed officers walked out of that meeting and was later baptized.
This is a true story, told cinematically. The chapter that records it is called A Second Day of Pentecost. The chapter is right.
