Tara never considered herself a church person. But after losing her younger sister, Bisi, she finds the name of Grace Assembly written inside Bisi’s Bible. Something about the faith Bisi carried, even while she was dying, refuses to leave Tara alone.

So Tara begins attending the church quietly, sitting near the back, observing more than participating and trying to understand what her sister had found in God.

But finding answers is not simple.

As Tara slowly becomes part of the church community, she faces misunderstandings, gossip and assumptions from people who notice how she dresses, who she speaks to and the confidence with which she carries herself — while rarely asking who she really is or why she came.

Along the way, Tara forms unexpected friendships with Mama Grace, Nneka and Pastor Ruth. Her confidence also begins to affect Nneka, a woman who has gradually learned to make herself smaller in her marriage. Watching Tara live without constantly seeking permission challenges Nneka to rediscover her own voice.

Yet underneath everything is the question Tara has carried since Bisi died:

How could Bisi still believe God was faithful when the healing everyone prayed for never came?

The Becoming is an emotional Nigerian Christian drama about grief, unanswered prayers, faith, friendship, judgement, identity and finding the courage to become who God is calling you to be.

Sometimes faith does not begin with certainty.

Sometimes it begins by simply coming back.
