Christian colleges are disappearing across America — and most Christians have barely noticed. In this documentary, we examine the growing crisis in Christian higher education, including the closure of approximately 50–70 Christian colleges and universities over the past decade and the disappearance of hundreds of smaller Bible institutes and ministry training programs.
The story begins with Nyack College, founded in 1882 to train missionaries, pastors, and Christian workers. After 131 years of ministry and education, Nyack College closed permanently in 2022. Its story represents a much larger transformation taking place across American Christian education.
This documentary explores why Christian colleges are closing, including declining church attendance, shrinking student pipelines, financial pressure, accreditation challenges, the impact of COVID-19, the rise of online education, and the changing role of small Bible colleges in preparing pastors and ministry leaders.
We also examine the institutions that have continued to survive, including different approaches based on clear Christian identity, financial independence, institutional mission, and online scale.
Most importantly, this is not simply a story about buildings and campuses. Christian colleges have historically helped train pastors, missionaries, worship leaders, youth workers, and the next generation of Christian leaders. Their decline raises a much bigger question: Who will train the next generation of Christian leaders?
This documentary looks honestly at the crisis while also asking what Christian families, churches, denominations, and institutions can do next.
