Here we have Arthurian Romances by Chrétien de Troyes, a medieval French poet. His works were popular during the 12th century and played a significant role in shaping the Arthurian legend.

In his romances, Chrétien introduced several iconic characters and themes that have become integral to Arthurian literature. One of his most famous works is "Lancelot, or The Knight of the Cart," which explores the love affair between Lancelot and Queen Guinevere. This story emphasises the ideals of courtly love and the conflicts that arise from it.

Chrétien's romances are known for their vivid descriptions of courtly life, tournaments, and the ideals of chivalry. He often depicted Arthur as a wise and just king, surrounded by noble knights who embark on quests, encounter magical beings, and overcome various challenges.

This Penguin Classics edition is translated by William W. Kibler and Carleton W. Carroll. The edition also includes notes, a glossary of medieval terms and an introduction by Kibler examining authorship and the sources of the romances.
