The Miracle of Kibeho | Our Lady of Kibeho & the Visionaries

What if a young girl in Rwanda claimed that she had seen the Virgin Mary — and years later, the Catholic Church officially recognized the apparitions?

This is the extraordinary story of Our Lady of Kibeho, one of the most remarkable Marian apparitions of the twentieth century.

In November 1981, at a Catholic school in Kibeho, Rwanda, a sixteen-year-old student named Alphonsine Mumureke reported seeing a mysterious woman who identified herself as the “Mother of the Word.” What began as the experience of one young girl soon became a profound spiritual story involving other visionaries, thousands of witnesses, prayer, repentance, conversion, suffering, forgiveness, and the call to return to God.

As the events continued, two other young women, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka and Marie Claire Mukangango, also reported encounters with the Virgin Mary. Their experiences became closely associated with the story of Kibeho and eventually with the Catholic Church’s investigation of the reported apparitions.

The message associated with Our Lady of Kibeho was not a message of curiosity or spectacle. It was a serious call to conversion, prayer, repentance, forgiveness, and a deeper relationship with God. The Rosary, Christian prayer, love of neighbor, and rejection of hatred were central themes.

The story of Kibeho is especially powerful because of what happened in Rwanda in the years that followed. In 1994, Rwanda experienced a devastating genocide that caused immense suffering and the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people. Because the events at Kibeho preceded this tragedy, many people later reflected on the warnings and spiritual messages associated with the apparitions. The relationship between Kibeho and the events of 1994 is a serious and sensitive subject, and this video presents it with respect rather than sensationalism.

At the heart of the Kibeho story is a simple Christian message: conversion cannot always be postponed.

The Catholic Church carefully investigated the reported apparitions. Medical and theological commissions were established during the investigation, and public devotion connected with Kibeho was authorized in 1988. On June 29, 2001, Bishop Augustin Misago of Gikongoro issued the definitive diocesan declaration recognizing the reported apparitions of the Virgin Mary at Kibeho. The three initial visionaries recognized were Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie Claire Mukangango. The apparition was associated with the title “Nyina wa Jambo,” meaning “Mother of the Word.”

The Church also makes an important distinction: an approved Marian apparition does not become a new article of faith or a replacement for the Gospel. Rather, such an apparition is understood as a possible help to Christian faith and prayer. The message must always lead people back to Jesus Christ, Sacred Scripture, the Sacraments, conversion, charity, and the life of the Church.

This is why the story of Our Lady of Kibeho remains so meaningful.

Mary does not call people to herself instead of Christ. She points toward her Son.

She calls us to pray when we would rather become distracted.

She calls us to forgive when our hearts want revenge.

She calls us to conversion when we would rather remain comfortable.

And she reminds us that hatred can destroy lives, while forgiveness and reconciliation can begin to heal what seems impossible to repair.

For Catholics around the world, Kibeho is therefore more than a story about an extraordinary apparition in Rwanda. It is an invitation to examine our own hearts.

Are we praying?

Are we forgiving?

Are we living our faith seriously?

Are we drawing closer to Jesus Christ?

Are we allowing resentment, anger, or hatred to take control of our hearts?

The message associated with Kibeho continues to challenge believers because these questions are not limited to one country or one generation. They belong to every human heart.

May it lead us closer to Jesus.

May it teach us the importance of forgiveness.

And may it remind us that true peace begins with conversion of the human heart.
