Alex Kendrick: How Making a "Cheesy Christian Movie" Changed The World

Before Facing the Giants, Fireproof, War Room, and The Forge, the Kendrick Brothers made a $20,000 movie called Flywheel with volunteers from their church in Albany, Georgia.

More than 20 years later, Alex Kendrick is returning to the story that started it all.

In this CCM Magazine conversation, Alex looks back on the chaotic making of the original Flywheel, including the production mistakes, the tiny budget, and the moment he realized he had become part of the “cheesy Christian movie” world he once joked about.

Then something unexpected happened.

The film was only supposed to play in one local theater for a few days, but it became the theater’s second-highest-grossing movie across 16 screens and stayed for six more weeks. From there, Flywheel helped launch a filmmaking journey that would eventually lead to some of the most recognizable Christian films of the last two decades.

Alex also shares the story behind FLYWHEEL: Ignition of the Soul, a new Portuguese-language reimagining of the original film shot in Brazil. He explains what it was like making a movie in a language he doesn’t speak, why the story crossed cultures, and how the project eventually made its way back to American audiences.

The conversation also explores the evolution of Christian filmmaking, why Alex believes excellence matters, his concerns about treating faith-based content like a box to check, and what he's learned about ambition, awards, and success after more than two decades in film.

Watch the full conversation with Alex Kendrick and hear the story behind the movie that started everything.

FLYWHEEL: Ignition of the Soul arrives in U.S. theaters October 16.
