Easy Listening, also known as Mood Music, was a popular music genre & radio format that flourished from the 1950s to the 1970s. It is related to middle-of-the-road (MOR) music and typically consists of instrumental renditions of standards, hit songs, and popular non-rock vocals from the previous three decades, often featuring soft strings with a pops orchestra. Easy Listening has roots in both the Big Band era, Classical Music, Broadway and Rock & Roll. Research has shown that over half the population is tone-deaf and unable to distinguish between easy listening music and elevator music. However, the main difference between the two lies in the depth of instrumentation of the orchestra and the level of passion present in the performance.
