What did ancient mystics actually do to encounter the divine? In this lecture, we examine the historical evidence for these practices including the Eleusinian Mysteries, Gnostic Rites, Neoplatonic Theurgy, Jewish Merkavah visions, as well as the earliest Christian rites. We also look at the movement of hermetic and ascetic Christians known as the Desert Fathers, focusing on Evagrius Ponticus, who first systematized these practices in his work Praktikos, opening the way for the emergence of the spread of Christian monastic communities.
