The Big Fisherman (1959)
Directed by Frank Borzage | Based on the novel by Lloyd C. Douglas

The Big Fisherman is a sweeping Biblical epic centered on Simon Peter, the Galilean fisherman who becomes one of Jesus Christ’s closest disciples. The narrative follows Peter’s spiritual transformation, tracing his journey from a rugged, independent fisherman to a humble “fisher of men” and pillar of the early Christian Church.

The film interweaves Peter’s story with that of Arnon, a young Arab princess who disguises herself as a servant to escape an arranged marriage and oppressive tribal politics. She seeks a new life among the Jews and eventually encounters the teachings of Jesus. Arnon's subplot serves as a vehicle to explore themes of pride, repentance, and personal redemption, paralleling Peter’s own inner struggle.

Set against the backdrop of Roman-occupied Judea, the film dramatizes key moments in Peter’s life, including his initial resistance to Jesus’s message, his eventual devotion, and his leadership among the apostles after Christ’s ascension. Although Jesus is not shown directly on screen (a choice made out of reverence), His presence and influence are deeply felt throughout the narrative.

Lavishly produced and filmed in Super Panavision 70, The Big Fisherman offers majestic landscapes, period costumes, and reverent storytelling typical of late 1950s religious epics. The film concludes with Peter fully embracing his divine calling, setting the stage for his future ministry and martyrdom, though the latter is not shown. This version includes a recreated overture, intermission, and exit music to restore the traditional experience of mid-century epic theater presentations.
