This session from Huntington University’s "Christian Thinking as Pilgrimage" conference features Dr. Karen Lee, a poet and the provost of Wheaton College. Dr. Lee shares a presentation on the Via Poetica—the way of poetry—as a framework for Christian higher education and intellectual inquiry.
Beginning with the discovery of an anonymous student’s prayer folded into a paper airplane on a freezing January morning, the address expands into a rich exploration of education as an incarnational pilgrimage. The discussion touches on the necessity of academic freedom as a space for Christian discipleship, the intersection of neuroscience and walking in nature, and the spiritual community formed through shared vulnerability.
The session concludes with original poetry readings by Dr. Lee and thoughtful reflections from Douglass "Jake" Jacobsen and Rhonda Hustedt Jacobsen's in reference to their book "Christianity and Intellectual Inquiry: Thinking as Pilgrimage."
Dr. Karen Lee serves as provost of Wheaton College, where she holds the faculty rank of Professor of English. An accomplished poet, fiction writer, literary critic, and translator, Dr. Lee is a former voting member of the National Book Critics Circle and a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Individual Artist’s Grant. Dr. Lee previously served as vice provost of assessment and Institutional Effectiveness at Point Loma Nazarene University and as chair of the English Department at Vanguard University of Southern California. She received an M.F.A. in fiction writing from Brown and an M.A. in English (poetry writing) and PhD in English from the University of California, Berkeley.
