LIVE High Definition (HD) broadcast of the Greek Orthodox Matins (Orthros/Morning Prayers) and Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom commemorating the 5th Sunday of Luke.
The Gospel reading for the 5th Sunday of Luke is the parable of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31), a story about the consequences of ignoring the needs of others. This is a warning against the dangers of wealth and the importance of compassion. The wealthy man who lived a life of luxury ignored the plight of Lazarus while they were both alive. However, in the afterlife, the rich man was punished. The parable teaches us that those who are blessed with wealth have a responsibility to help those who are less fortunate on earth. The parable also emphasizes that true wealth comes from being compassionate and generous to others who need help.
This parable also highlights the importance of repentance and faith. The rich man, even in his torment, saw Lazarus as someone who should serve him. The wealthy man failed to comprehend that he was the one who needed help. Abraham’s response to the rich man’s request for Lazarus to be raised from the dead to warn his brothers was that his brothers already had Moses and the prophets to guide them. The parable states that those who do not listen to the teachings of Moses and the prophets will not be convinced even if someone (Lazarus) rises from the dead. The moral of the story is that it is important to listen to God’s word and follow His commandments while we still have time on earth.
